Protecting your gutters may seem like one of those trivial things in life that can be left if not completely ignored for some time. You may think that dripping gutters that have overflowed are only irritating if you have to step under them. For other people it may be that gutters cause a few other problems, the dripping from them can keep you awake at night or they can damage plants or lead to your garden becoming waterlogged in places. The biggest problem with overflowing guttering though is the damage it can do to your house itself. In fact blocked guttering is worse than no guttering at all as it leads to water entering your home where the water overflows. Water from a gutter will often stream down the wall of your home and may find a gap along i’s way. On other guttering the gutters may be placed right by the point where your roof and walls meet meaning water seeps in here as well. These leaks of course may lead to damp walls, which in turn can lead to mould problems. Leaks can also lead to plaster coming off from walls and ceilings but the biggest problem is where water meets wood. Wood will eventually rot if it gets wet regularly and will then lose its strength. It is also true though that important joists and beams in your home if not treated to be waterproof may well swell when they come in to contact with water and even when they dry out again will not have the same strength. Overtime timbers will lose strength if they get wet often even if they look to be in good condition and they may not be able to hold the weight that is asked of them.
All these problems just from blocked guttering; it is mind you not easy always to unblock guttering, it may involve regular trips up ladders or on some properties a hydraulic lift may be needed. If you use a simple filter to stop leaves and debris going down your down pipe you only make the blockage occur at this point as debris collects around this filter.
A better option is of course to stop any leaves or other debris from getting into your gutters to begin with. The best way to do this is with mesh gutter protectors that sit over the gutter and let only water through: even the likes of soil and pine needles will struggle to get through. The debris will also simply blow away with a gust of wind rather than getting caught or sat on the mesh.
The mesh is relatively easy to fit if you can access the roof but you may want to use a professional such as a roofer with the right ladders and safety equipment to gain access and then the experience to not damage the roof. These protectors fit easily without nails as well using a strong bond for outdoor use so once fitted no maintenance is needed and they should last. Steel or aluminium meshes especially will last for a long time and are available in colours to match your roof.
